Our 8-month training program builds couples therapy competencies within the framework of “The Masterson Approach: Intrapsychic Relational Therapy of Personality Structures”. Comprising theoretical knowledge and supervision, the program includes theoretical and skills training that examines in detail the processes through which intrapsychic affects distort relational realities, as well as psychotherapy practice and case supervision.
What Are the Goals of Masterson Couples Therapy?
It aims at self-expression, the self’s openness to integration with an other, openness to change and transformation together with one’s partner, and the exploration of these areas; at both partners expressing their own selves as individuals within the relationship and supporting each other’s self-expression; and at working with the intrapsychic structure of both the individual and the relationship.
How Does Masterson Couples Therapy Work?
It works with the capacities of the self and the ego. It explores the self through the events that each partner describes. It looks at the underlying motivations and dynamics of relational cycles and events. Taking into account how each partner’s individual pathology is reflected in the relationship, it works with object relations to resolve the pathology of the relationship. It works by identifying each individual’s intrapsychic structure, introducing it to the other partner, and intervening in the interplay of the dynamics between them.
