Therapy and Research in Personality Disorders
The Masterson Institute Turkey was founded in 2010 by Dr. Meral Aydın, a Faculty Member of the International Masterson Institute. Having provided accredited training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: The Masterson Approach for more than 15 years, the Masterson Institute Turkey also continues its psychotherapy research and academic work on personality disorders, character, and the structuring of the self.
The two-year accredited training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: The Masterson Approach begins every July. Since 2023, a couples therapy training specially adapted to Turkish culture by Dr. Meral Aydın has been held every November. The Object Relations training takes place every February. The Masterson Institute Turkey is the only authorized institution in Turkey offering accredited Masterson Approach training.
The Institute offers joint training programs with an international network of institutes located in New York, Miami, Orlando, Vancouver, Johannesburg, Cape Town, London, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Athens, Bucharest, Sofia, and Istanbul.
The Masterson Approach addresses personality disorders within the framework of disorders of the self. Rather than limiting itself to the pathological personality disorders defined in the DSM-5, it takes a far more comprehensive view, addressing disorders of the self under three main headings: the Narcissistic, Borderline, and Schizoid Disorders of the Self. This framework enables the Masterson Approach to work in depth on the building of character. The point we wish to emphasize here is that we aim not only for symptomatic improvement but also for structural change. Building on an understanding of pathological development, the Masterson Approach describes the ways in which a healthy real self can be established. It offers a valuable means of transforming affects distorted by defenses, through processes in which they can be genuinely felt and managed, into living affects that express themselves spontaneously from our real self.
What Is the Aim of the Masterson Approach Psychotherapy Training?
The Masterson Approach is a psychoanalytic psychotherapy approach developed through many years of clinical work. It is highly effective in clinical practice as a means of building character structure, and it has been culturally adapted. This training aims to pass on a valid treatment method, in both theory and practice, to clinicians who are interested in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and who wish to gain knowledge and practical skills that go beyond symptom-focused therapies.
