MASTERSON INSTITUTE READING GROUP SERIES – APRIL SESSION
Led by Psychologist Fatma Betül Sağman
“The Real Self” – James F. Masterson
READING ANALYST: Psychologist Fatma Betül Sağman
BOOK OF THE MONTH
The April session of the Masterson Institute Turkey Reading Group Series will focus on James F. Masterson’s book “The Real Self.”
The first major work by American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut, which opened a new era in thinking about narcissism. In this book, taking the narcissistic transferences as a starting point, Kohut developed a new theory that, in its broad outlines, sought to remain within the framework of classical psychoanalysis. Approaching narcissism with an empathy free of value judgments, Kohut earned great acclaim for this work but also drew harsh criticism. Opponents accused Kohut of “gratifying the transference instead of analyzing it.” The result was a new theoretical split in the history of psychoanalysis; the debate between Kohut and Kernberg remains influential today.
