BOOK OF THE MONTH
The December session of the Masterson Institute Turkey Reading Group Series will focus on Donald W. Winnicott’s book “Playing and Reality.”
Drawing on intensive clinical work with infants and children, D. W. Winnicott made valuable contributions to the understanding of human psychic and cultural development. One of Winnicott’s most decisive contributions—emerging from an exploration of the links between seemingly unrelated subjects such as dreams, playing, creativity, cultural experience, and the implicit rivalry between the male and female elements in the individual—was to draw attention to the intermediate area of experience between psychic reality, regarded as personal and internal, and external or shared reality. In Playing and Reality, which is built around the important paper “Transitional Objects and Transitional Phenomena,” Winnicott discusses the place of this transitional stage both in the life of the individual and in the intense experiences found in areas such as art, religion, imaginative life, and creative scientific work. Winnicott’s most frequently cited work, this book offers many insights for general readers as well as for psychoanalysts.

The session will be held in an interactive format designed to create a shared space for thinking together and exchanging ideas. ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Filiz Dere, MD (Specialist)
Dr. Filiz Dere completed medical training at the Abant İzzet Baysal University Faculty of Medicine between 2003 and 2009, received psychiatry residency training at Bakırköy Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Hospital between 2009 and 2015, and completed compulsory service at Malkara State Hospital.
During a second specialist posting in Kocaeli, Dr. Dere took part in projects on improving community mental health, suicide and crisis intervention, developing mental health services in primary care, and mental health training for family physicians, and also served as administrative physician of the Community Mental Health Center. Since 2021, Dr. Dere has been working at Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital.
