The March session of the Masterson Institute Turkey Reading Group Series will focus on Heinz Kohut’s book “The Analysis of the Self.”
The first major work by American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut, which opened a new era in thinking about narcissism. In this book, taking the narcissistic transferences as a starting point, Kohut developed a new theory that, in its broad outlines, sought to remain within the framework of classical psychoanalysis. Approaching narcissism with an empathy free of value judgments, Kohut earned great acclaim for this work but also drew harsh criticism. Opponents accused Kohut of “gratifying the transference instead of analyzing it.” The result was a new theoretical split in the history of psychoanalysis; the debate between Kohut and Kernberg remains influential today.

The session will be held in an interactive format designed to create a shared space for thinking together and exchanging ideas. ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Psychologist Gizem Sözsahibi
Psychologist Gizem Sözsahibi graduated from the Department of Psychology at Middle East Technical University (METU) in 2017. Sözsahibi has conducted psychotherapy in hospital adult psychiatry inpatient wards and outpatient clinics, working with psycho-oncology, trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, and disorders of the self, and currently works at Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital.
